GARDEN LECTURE: At Brookside Museum, 21 Fairground Ave, Ballston Spa. 2:30 pm. A return of our popular program from last year, Fridays in the Garden. SARATOGA NIGHT MARKET: The Saratoga Night Market is opening to the public this spring with a focus on female-developed products and businesses. Shoppers can visit the market on scheduled Friday and Saturday nights at the Palette Saratoga co-working space in the lower level of The Collamer Building, at 480 Broadway in downtown Saratoga Springs.Each market will vary, with rotating vendors. The Saratoga Night Market will be open on April 14, 15, 21, 22, 28 and 29; May 5, 6, 19, 20 and 27; June 2, 3, 9, 10, 23 and 24; as well as July 7, 8, 21, 22, 28 and 29. Hours are 5 to 8 p.m. on Fridays and 4 to 8 p.m. on Saturdays. Vendor spots are sold out for April, with limited spaces available for May, June and beyond. USED INSTRUMENT DRIVE: The Troy Public Library is partnering with Vanguard-ASO, Inc., the volunteer supporters of the Albany Symphony Orchestra, in a used instrument collection drive benefiting needy Capital Region public school students of all ages.The collection drive takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The instruments will be distributed to twelve local school districts which lack sufficient instruments for hundreds of children whose families cannot afford expensive rental or purchase prices. Your tax deductible donation gives these eager young musicians the priceless opportunity to study music in depth and play in their school orchestras or bands. FALL SCREENING: Albany Medical Center's Outpatient Physical Therapy office will hold free balance and falls screenings for the public on June 3, 10, and 17 at their location at 99 Delaware Avenue in Delmar from 9 am to noon. Screenings will include a brief questionnaire, a falls risk assessment, and a short series of balance tests for participants. A physical therapist will then discuss the results and provide recommendations based on a participant's risk of falling. AUTHOR TALK: Waterford Public Library is hosting an author talk with Karen DeBonis on Saturday, June 10th at 1 p.m. Karen will be at the library (117 3rd St, Waterford) discussing her new memoir "Growth: A Mother, Her Son, and the Brain Tumor They Survived." Books will be available for purchase and signing.

MELVILLE HOUSE OPEN: On Saturday, June 10, 2023, the Lansingburgh Historical Society will open the Herman Melville House, located at 2 114th St., Troy, NY, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. And as an added feature on the 10th, we will offer a guided walking tour of 4 lovely gardens within a short distance. PATH THROUGH HISTORY: On June 10 between 11 am & 4 pm, journey with reenactors to the American Revolution, from the Van Schaick Mansion to the Breastworks of Peebles Island and learn about the role that they played in the planning of the Battle of Saratoga. Hear from a Native American storyteller about the earliest inhabitants of the area. Step through time as Playhouse Players discuss the Shipyard and learn about the history of Delaware Avenue, Cohoes, NY and the busy business corridor it once was. All events are free. SARATOGA NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK: 10 am at the visitor center. Recreating History and the 24th Regiment: Discover how His Majesty's 24th Regiment of Foot, recreated, portrays a famed British regiment as they were during the Battles of Saratoga. ADULT CRAFT: Tangle Coasters at the Troy Public Library. This month we will be making tangle coasters. Tangling is the art of creating beautiful images using simple lines, dots, and curves. COMMUNITY MEAL: YWCA of the Greater Capital Region, Inc., located at 21 First St. in Troy, serves a weekly community meal from 5 to 6 p.m. each Tuesday. It is a free-of-charge, to-go dinner provided for YWCA residents as well as anyone in the community. All are welcome to join us each week for a free, nutritious cooked meal. Meals are prepared by a variety of volunteers including but not limited to YWCA-GCR staff, residents, community members and students. Residents are encouraged to participate in preparation of the meals and will be assisted by staff in menu planning, shopping and time management. We serve an average of 75 people per week. The YWCA-GCR also partners with community organizations to set up booths at weekly Community Meal to advertise, promote and engage guests in services. JAM WORKSHOP: Learn to make jam with the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Saratoga County. 6-8 pm, online via Zoom or in person at 50 West High Street, Ballston Spa. Learn how to safely make a strawberry full sugar, low sugar, or no sugar jam, plus freezer jam; a no cook recipe great for kids that requires no canning equipment. SIDEWALK WARRIORS: Each Thursday evening in the parking lot at 35 State St. in Troy, dozens of volunteers set up a large number of tables for Sidewalk Warriors’ weekly distribution. At these tables, visitors can find hot foods, sandwiches, produce, pantry items and essentials. The group often provides special distributions such as towels, linens, pillows, winter boots, underwear, socks or laundry detergent. The folks who attend the distribution may be experiencing homelessness or food insecurity, or they may simply be running short on resources at the end of the month. Set up for the weekly Sidewalk Warriors distribution events begins at 5 p.m. each Thursday, and volunteers begin serving at 6 p.m., no matter what the weather. ALBANY CIVIC THEATER PERFORMANCE: Harbinger Theatre will continue its 2023 season with "The Motherf**ker with the Hat" by Stephen Adly Guirgis at the historic Albany Civic Theater. The show is described as a play about addiction, love, friendship, growing up, and misplaced haberdashery. This show made its Broadway debut in 2011 at the Schoenfeld Theatre in New York City. KNIT & CROCHET GROUP: Join the Troy Public Library for a bi-weekly stitching group from 10 to 11 a.m. on every first and third Friday of the month. Whether you have experience knitting or crocheting or you want to start learning a new skill, this group is for you! Participants will work together to stitch blankets and other needed items to donate to local homeless shelters and outreach groups. Participants are also welcome to work on their own personal projects. Bring your own knitting needles and crochet hooks or use what we have available. THE POISON LADY: At the next meeting of the Upper Hudson Sisters in Crime chapter of The Mavens Of Mayhem, June 17, from 11:15 am to 12:15 pm, Luci Zahray, aka the Poison Lady, will offer tips on how to successfully poison someone—in fiction, of course. Luci has two great passions in life: poisons and mysteries, though she's never poisoned anyone or tried to write a mystery. She's a retired pharmacist with a master's degree in toxicology from Texas A&M. Over the years, mystery writers throughout North America have sought Luci's expertise on poisoning their fictional characters. And now she's going to share poisonous tidbits with the Mavens and other interested readers and writers. STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL: Annual Strawberry Festival at Sand Lake Baptist Church 2960 NY-43, Averill Park. 1-5 pm. Fresh homemade strawberry shortcakes with homemade whipped cream; freshly picked strawberry pints (dependent on availability); a well stocked bake sale with all of your favorite homemade goodies. Don't miss out on the fresh-from-the-grill hot dogs and theater-style buttered popcorn. Bring the kids to pet the baby goats and don't forget to purchase tickets for the strawberry quilt raffle, handmade by a member of the church. All proceeds will help fund Parsonage & Church repairs.

COMMUNITY FAIR: The Rensselaer Public Library is having a Community Fair on Saturday, June 17 from 11-2 to start their Summer Reading Program, "All Together Now". Children make a pledge to read 15 minutes a day during the summer to get a free reader's kit. The Friends of the Library will serve ice cream sundaes and popcorn, and there will be a balloon twister and face painting. Community members will have tables, a fire truck, car seat installation inspections, music from Rensselaer High, giveaways and fun activities. This docudrama set during the U.S. Civil Rights Movement depicts the marches from Selma, Ala., to Montgomery to secure voting rights for black Americans and focuses on the actions of Martin Luther King Jr. This movie is rated PG-13 – some material may be unsuitable for children under 13. BLACK FILM FESTIVAL: The Palace Theatre in Albany announces its first annual Renaissance Black Film Festival, June 22–25 at the historic Palace Theatre and the opulent Renaissance Hotel, both within walking distance from one another. RBFF will show films from a plethora of Black filmmakers across the country, with awards and cash prizes going to Best Narrative Feature, Best Documentary Feature, Best Narrative Short, Best Documentary Short, and Best First Project. SUMMER KICK OFF: The Second Annual Summer Kickoff Festival on Sunday, June 25th from 10 AM to 2 PM in Wiswall Park, Ballston Spa. A TREMENDOUS MACHINE: "A Tremendous Machine: Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Secretariat's Triple Crown" opens to the public at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, coinciding with opening day at Saratoga Race Course. At the conclusion of the Saratoga racing season, A Tremendous Machine will travel to Colonial Downs in Secretariat's home state of Virginia. The onsite exhibition at the Museum will remain on view through Oct. 29.
